Introduction to Linguistics
Introduction to Linguistics is a foundation course envisioned for both future language service providers, translators, or language teachers and general audience genuinely interested in the way language works. Within this course, students will get some insights into the history of the study of language, learn about the branches and sub-branches of linguistics, develop awareness of the main linguistic concepts and learn how to conduct the elementary analysis of linguistics structures at various levels of language organization: phonetic, morphological, lexical, syntactic and textual. This course will provide students with the necessary theoretical knowledge for analyzing, describing and using language being aware of the internal mechanisms that underlie this most complicated, sophisticated and enigmatic mode of human communication.

About Instructor
Tatjana Smirnova
Tatjana Smirnova is an associate professor at the Institute of Applied Linguistics, Faculty of E-Learning Technologies and Humanities at Riga Technical University (RTU). Her research interests cover linguistic iconicity, cross-disciplinary semiotics and axiological aspects of language use. She has authored and co-authored more than 40 publications on linguistic iconicity, functional approach to LSP translation, and aspects of LSP teaching. Tatjana Smirnova has extensive experience in LSP text translation and editing in such fields as civil engineering, architecture, and entrepreneurship, as well as institutional, administrative, and legal communication.
